Green Screen Blues

Hey Gang!

So, guess what? I know I've been promising the iPhone podcast for days and days now and your wish is about to come true! Check back today for a 2nd post containing the newest video: GeekGirl's iPhone iLike's and iGripes: Part 1. That's right, people, I have SO much feedback from you all that I had to split the episode into 2 parts! (Maybe even 3...I haven't finished Part 2 yet, so we'll see how long it is). All I have to do is export the final file from Final Cut Pro, which I'm having difficulty with because for some reason, it keeps squishing the picture horizontally, no matter what settings I choose. So I'm going into work today, laptop in hand, and making Kourosh (of RossBlog and John and Ross Show fame, my editor/cameraman extraordinaire at The Tonight Show) help me since he exports all of the videos I produce at work. Hopefully it should be a quick fix, and the video will be posted later today!

In the meantime, I decided to tell you guys that I had quite the learning experience while making this podcast...the green screen, unfortunately, did NOT work out. It turns out that there are so many nuances in making a green screen work, including needing to be like 15 feet away from it so that it doesn't reflect around you in a halo (especially if you have blonde hair like me...it usually picks up the green, and then when you key out the green, it keys out some of my hair!) The bad news is I had to shoot this episode old-school style, but the good news is that I learned a lot about green screens and I will put all of that information in an upcoming episode. Just to tide you over, above is a video with John Melendez and Ross "the Intern" Mathews from The John and Ross Show playing with our new green screen (the very same one I brought home and tried to re-purpose for GeekGirl) for your viewing pleasure. Check back tonight for iPhone iLikes and iGripes: Part 1!!

Remember, check back tonight for the iPhone episode!

Sandy Dillon: Tonight Show with Jay Leno Audio Monitor Engineer

Well, if that blog title didn't excite you, this video will! I'm STILL working on the iPhone podcast...seriously, you guys, I shot like 57 minutes of footage because I had SOOOO much stuff, and it's taking me forever to get the edits and graphics done in between work and all of the after-work activities I've had in the last 2 weeks. So I'm sorry for the delay, but know that I am working on it diligently!

In the meantime, one of the other things that I do when I'm not donning the GeekGirl persona is producing The John and Ross Show, an web-exclusive, completely original web series for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Click HERE to check out the John and Ross Show website. We post new videos every Monday, and every other week we post and exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at a staff or crew member at the show, and we explore what he/she does that YOU as the audience see on the show each night. It's really fun, and nothing like it has never been done in terms of The Tonight Show. Jay himself makes cameos sometimes!

Here's a behind the scenes exclusive of our Tonight Show Audio Monitor Engineer...he basically sits in the audio booth during the LIVE show and controls what everyone, including the guest band that night, hear in their monitors! Check it out...it's really informative and hysterical:

Back to working on the iPhone iLikes and iGripes episode edits!! Stay Tuned!!!

New GeekGirl URL Poll! I need YOUR help picking the best new website name!

Hey Geek Guys and Gals!

Soooo, you guys have BLOWN ME AWAY with all the iPhone iLikes and iGripes that I've gotten! So much so, that it's taking me a while to edit down the podcast because I can't possibly include them all, but they are all so good it's making it hard to choose! (A great dilemma to have). I am almost done with the editing (I'm also experimenting with a fancy new GREEN SCREEN for my podcasts, so that's adding edit time as well! fingers crossed. if anyone ever wondered how a green screen works, I can explain that to y'all as soon as I'm sure my effort was successful. :)

Anyway, in order to tide you over, as I know you are all eager to hear your emails/comments read on the iPhone podcast, I have a quick little video announcing my new GeekGirl blog URL here, followed by a poll, because I need YOUR help in deciding whether or not I picked the right name! First, watch this (it's super-short, I promise):

A URL is a fancy name for a web address (i.e., www.GeekGirlKnows.com or Apple.com or Google.com, etc. etc.). You can actually have your website/blog "living" on one website addy, and then have a "Vanity URL" (a fancy word for a simpler web address) for which you just purchase the domain name, and simply have it "point" or "redirect" to where your website actually lives. (Maybe I'll do a GeekGirl Quickie on how this works if anyone out there is actually interested or curious! Let me know if you are).

To make a long story short, (or rather, a short story long!) since my original URL was really hard to describe to people (http://geekgirlpodcast.blogspot.com) my best friend/co-worker/officemate at the Tonight Show, Ross (check out his blog HERE), and I were brainstorming the other day on a website name that would be super easy and also fun and applicable to me and what I do here around the old GeekGirl blog. SO, we came up with GeekGirlKnows! Just imagine me saying, "You have questions? GeekGirlKnows!" How's that for a tagline? Fun, right?

There's only one slight problem...before we came up with GeekGirlKnows.com, I had purchased the domain GeekGirlPodcast.com. Both of them work right now (watch, open up a new window and type them both in...they magically go to the same place!) Now I'm not sure which one I like better! Here's where YOU guys come in! Below is a poll... give me your input on what name is better for my new URL!

So vote vote vote and tell me what YOU think! The winning name will be used in all of my GeekGirl graphics and promotions!

Stay tuned for the iPhone iLikes and iGripes video podcast starring YOUR questions and comments!!!

Cheers,

Daria aka GeekGirl

GeekGirl Quickie 3: Travel Gads!

Hey Geek Guys and Gals!

As promised, here is the QUICKIE that I shot right before I left on my trip to Bali, Indonesia. I didn't have time to finish editing & uploading it before I went, so I finished it this week, right when I got back! I talk about some fun gadgets that I call "travel essentials" that complement my high-tech, plugged-in life. Check it out and let me know your thoughts:

I'm working on Episode 7, a topic that I can proudly say was suggested by a GeekGirl blog buddy, and it's going to focus on the ubiquitous iPhone. If you have any gripes about the iPhone, either the previous versions or the latest & greatest, email them to me at geek.girl@earthlink.net. I'd especially love some VIDEO QUESTIONS emailed to me in any format as long as the file size doesn't exceed 7 MB (or, upload your question to YouTube and send me a link!) and I just MIGHT include your video question in the next podcast! (PS-the video question can be about ANYTHING that you think I might be able to answer for you!)

That's all for now, gang.
