(UPDATED!) Day 10: Better, Faster, Stronger. Plus, The Ice Storm.

--EOD REPORT--
i had the following delights for lunch and dinner today:
asparagus soup with some of my dinner salmon and veggies mixed in.

salmon with "gingerly" sauce and a hearty salad.

the salmon was amazing. SO yummy. i put a big chunk of it in my asparagus soup for lunch, then ate the rest for dinner. there was a big salad with some radishes, cucumbers, cabbage, etc. with the salmon, and the delectable gingerly dressing. i have to say i'm not a big fan of salads in general. i love just plain vegetables, and unless it's arugala, i'm not really interested in the leaves. i guess because i've never been super into salad dressing? lettuce to me is just a vehicle for salad dressing. sorry to offend any salad lovers out there. :)

FINAL EOD TALLY:

LBS LOST: 8.5
PUREES CONSUMED: 4
NUMBER OF TIMES I HAVE COMMENTED ON ASPARAGUS PEE SMELL: too many.

--MORNING REPORT--
better, faster, stronger.
sorry i didn't blog last night! like i said in the morning report yesterday, i had a tough day yesterday, mainly due to the Crimson Tide and being on day 2 of just purees, and then of course it got cold last night. (to clarify, i KNOW that y'all out there who don't live in SoCal are laughing at me because i think 60 degrees is cold, and you know what? i'm ok with that. it doesn't affect me. it was cold for HERE, dammit!)

so, i actually passed out early from all of these factors last night. and i woke up today feeling pretty darned good! i was still a bit tired, but that's to be expected, and i lost another .5 LBS. this morning as i was driving into work, on the first cool, rainy, chilly day in a long time, i felt great. i love this weather, and i love feeling like the seasons are actually changing.

not that i complain about our great weather here, but, well, i do complain.

because i need some rain to balance out all the sunshine. actually, i'd like a good amount of rain, because i'm moody like that. (The Ice Storm is one of my favorite books, what do you expect? also, btw's, there is a GREAT movie adaptation of that book starring these amazing people:
kevin kline, joan allen, sigourney weaver, christina ricci, elijah wood... and a 70's swinger sex party. if you have not seen this film, you must. that's all there is.
anyway, i was driving in this cool, moody weather fully aware of the change that i have been undergoing, and i was pleased that the weather around me was changing as well. we all work together, as a system, right? and then, Kanye came on again! this time it was a bit of a throwback- "Stronger" came on, and i just ROCKED OUT to it in the car, and i really felt like i was better, faster, stronger. and i was reminded by -Ye that that which does not kill me only makes me stronger; a metaphor for how things that are challenging are also rewarding once survived. so today, that is my theme. i'm one strong bizzle, and i am working it, baby.

lastly, i got my food delivery this morning and am SO excited to see solid food in there! here's what's on the menu (i told chef kelly how much i love garlic, so she added more to this week's food. SCORE! who knew garlic could make a girl so happy? just don't try to make out with me this week:

10/9
Salmon salad with B~12 crave dressing (lots of garlic for you)
10/10

Garlic shrimp asparagus quinoa with pine nuts

That's it for humpday morning report! make it a good day, people, and remember that Kanye wants you to be better, faster and stronger today. just do it.

Digital Book on Your iPhone! (and a FREE one for a limited time!)

Hey GeekGirl Gang:

If you have an iPhone, you MUST check out this really great new app just added! Independently published author Emmett James partnered with an open-source software writer for iPhone apps and converted his whole memoir into HTML code AND it's own, self-contained software app! All of the text and images and chapters are formatted for your iPhone, with digital bookmarks, page breaks, page-turners...the works! Is this the future of books?? I'm not quite sure that I can say that I would like it to be, because if you watched my last video you'd know that I LOVE printed books, however I think this free application and way to read a book is SUPER cool.

All you have to do is use your iPhone and go to the App store. Search "Admit One A Journey" and it will come up with this cover art as the icon:

Click on it to download/install, and the whole book with all of its custom formatting will download to your phone in like 3 minutes and you can start reading! There are even active links within the book (at the end) that will let you link to Amazon and purchase a printed version of the book!

I really am amazed by this technology. It's especially important for independent authors like Mr. James who aren't signed with a big publisher and are forced to fight "The Man" and the discriminatory cycle of publishing via grass-roots marketing efforts like this one. And the best part of it all? It's a very GREEN way to consume media! No trees were harmed in the making of this book! And you all know how much I love eco-friendly technology!

I think this type of self-promotion and ease of application creation for the App Store are a sign of the times and speak loudly to the direction our country and technology are moving in general. I also think it's an incredible way for people to be able to create their works of art, be it books, software, or art proper (in all forms of media, of course!) and get it out to the rest of the world without a middleman. All in all, I really think it's awesome! But what do YOU think?

I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on the subject! Please post them in the COMMENT section below. I might even do another GeekGirl poll to see what you all think so we can compare!

Your mission, GeekGirl Gang, is to
1) go to the app store on your iPhone, download the book, and then rate/review it in the app store.
2) come back here and post in the COMMENTS section below about your thoughts on digital books in this format in general!

GeekGirl Quickie 3: Travel Gads!

Hey Geek Guys and Gals!

As promised, here is the QUICKIE that I shot right before I left on my trip to Bali, Indonesia. I didn't have time to finish editing & uploading it before I went, so I finished it this week, right when I got back! I talk about some fun gadgets that I call "travel essentials" that complement my high-tech, plugged-in life. Check it out and let me know your thoughts:

I'm working on Episode 7, a topic that I can proudly say was suggested by a GeekGirl blog buddy, and it's going to focus on the ubiquitous iPhone. If you have any gripes about the iPhone, either the previous versions or the latest & greatest, email them to me at geek.girl@earthlink.net. I'd especially love some VIDEO QUESTIONS emailed to me in any format as long as the file size doesn't exceed 7 MB (or, upload your question to YouTube and send me a link!) and I just MIGHT include your video question in the next podcast! (PS-the video question can be about ANYTHING that you think I might be able to answer for you!)

That's all for now, gang.

GEEK GIRL'S NEW HAIRCUT, a good cause, and a damn-good hair straightening gadget!

Hey Blog Buddies!

OK, so you know how the subheading on my blog calls me a "not-so-ordinary geek girl?" The reason for that, as I'm sure those of you who know me will already know, is because I'm just as much into fashion, art, shoes, makeup and all of the artsy and not-simply-practical things that you would normally associate with a "geek". We're breaking down stereotypes here at the old Geek Girl Blog. :) LOL.

Anyhow, I JUST got my hair cut short for the first time in years, and, for those of you who are starting think that today's blog would be without any gadgets, think again! I wanted to share my new haircut with you all, as I'm pretty excited about it and still a bit in shock that I chopped off so much, and then I want to share a hair-related gadget with you that I just got that I LOVE--it's a modern marvel of engineering.

OK, here's the hair:

It's actually really dark underneath too, but you can't really see in this picture. You'll see it in the next podcast. Thoughts?? You likee? I think it's sassy and fun...and a change is always nice, especially if you've been in a slump like I have recently. :(

And now on to the gadget part--I asked for one thing and one thing only this year for my birthday, which was two weeks ago. I wanted a damn good hair straightener, like the one the stars use (not to be like them, but because they don't have time for crappy gadgets, and I decided that at 28 I deserved a damn good straightening gadget). So, my wildest dreams were fulfilled, and here you go...I present the GHD Styler:

it may not look like much, but for those of you (boys
and girls) who use devices such as this, this one's the bee's knees. Seriously. I wouldn't use that phrase if I weren't serious. :) (For more info on the styler, click HERE. I promise I have no interest in this company promotion wise, nor do I with any of the other products I talk about/review on this blog. They are just gadgets that I use, and I will be honest about them!)

And before I sign off, I just wanted to mention a worthy cause: I was bummed when I cut my hair that it wasn't long enough to donate to Locks of Love, (click on the name to visit their non-profit site), which provides hair pieces to kids suffering from illnesses that cause them to lose their hair. I thought I'd mention the site/cause here, as I feel that it's a very worthy cause, in the hopes that one of you out there might be thinking about cutting your hair too, and if so, perhaps yours is long enough for Locks of Love. If you do decide to do it, feel free to bring along your camera and send me photos/video of your cut and donation and I'll make sure to feature it in my next blog!

Allright Blog Buddies, that's all for now. Stay Tuned for more exciting stuff coming up!

A Few Good Gads

Greetings!

So, I am in production RIGHT NOW on Episode 4 of the video podcast. It will be completed tomorrow (Monday 11/12) night, and should be live on Tuesday morning. I am going to give you a bit of a sneak-peek here by giving away the topic because I need to hear from YOU about something that I will then reveal in the new podcast. Here's what I need to know:

What is your favorite gadget?

I am going to talk about 5 gadgets that I love, and expect the unexpected here. I'm sure lots of people will say their iPhones, iPods, etc., which is great, but I want to also hear about other things that you all love. Then, I want to reveal to you all if there is one response that is overwhelmingly universal, or if I get any wacky responses, I might share those as well!

Email me your answer to geek.girl@earthlink.net. Put the word "GADGET" in the subject line. OR, post it in the COMMENTS section below. Hope to hear from you!

Otherwise, come back for the new podcast tomorrow night/Tuesday morning!
