Green Screen Blues

Hey Gang!

So, guess what? I know I've been promising the iPhone podcast for days and days now and your wish is about to come true! Check back today for a 2nd post containing the newest video: GeekGirl's iPhone iLike's and iGripes: Part 1. That's right, people, I have SO much feedback from you all that I had to split the episode into 2 parts! (Maybe even 3...I haven't finished Part 2 yet, so we'll see how long it is). All I have to do is export the final file from Final Cut Pro, which I'm having difficulty with because for some reason, it keeps squishing the picture horizontally, no matter what settings I choose. So I'm going into work today, laptop in hand, and making Kourosh (of RossBlog and John and Ross Show fame, my editor/cameraman extraordinaire at The Tonight Show) help me since he exports all of the videos I produce at work. Hopefully it should be a quick fix, and the video will be posted later today!

In the meantime, I decided to tell you guys that I had quite the learning experience while making this podcast...the green screen, unfortunately, did NOT work out. It turns out that there are so many nuances in making a green screen work, including needing to be like 15 feet away from it so that it doesn't reflect around you in a halo (especially if you have blonde hair like me...it usually picks up the green, and then when you key out the green, it keys out some of my hair!) The bad news is I had to shoot this episode old-school style, but the good news is that I learned a lot about green screens and I will put all of that information in an upcoming episode. Just to tide you over, above is a video with John Melendez and Ross "the Intern" Mathews from The John and Ross Show playing with our new green screen (the very same one I brought home and tried to re-purpose for GeekGirl) for your viewing pleasure. Check back tonight for iPhone iLikes and iGripes: Part 1!!

Remember, check back tonight for the iPhone episode!

Sandy Dillon: Tonight Show with Jay Leno Audio Monitor Engineer

Well, if that blog title didn't excite you, this video will! I'm STILL working on the iPhone podcast...seriously, you guys, I shot like 57 minutes of footage because I had SOOOO much stuff, and it's taking me forever to get the edits and graphics done in between work and all of the after-work activities I've had in the last 2 weeks. So I'm sorry for the delay, but know that I am working on it diligently!

In the meantime, one of the other things that I do when I'm not donning the GeekGirl persona is producing The John and Ross Show, an web-exclusive, completely original web series for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Click HERE to check out the John and Ross Show website. We post new videos every Monday, and every other week we post and exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at a staff or crew member at the show, and we explore what he/she does that YOU as the audience see on the show each night. It's really fun, and nothing like it has never been done in terms of The Tonight Show. Jay himself makes cameos sometimes!

Here's a behind the scenes exclusive of our Tonight Show Audio Monitor Engineer...he basically sits in the audio booth during the LIVE show and controls what everyone, including the guest band that night, hear in their monitors! Check it out...it's really informative and hysterical:

Back to working on the iPhone iLikes and iGripes episode edits!! Stay Tuned!!!

New GeekGirl URL Poll! I need YOUR help picking the best new website name!

Hey Geek Guys and Gals!

Soooo, you guys have BLOWN ME AWAY with all the iPhone iLikes and iGripes that I've gotten! So much so, that it's taking me a while to edit down the podcast because I can't possibly include them all, but they are all so good it's making it hard to choose! (A great dilemma to have). I am almost done with the editing (I'm also experimenting with a fancy new GREEN SCREEN for my podcasts, so that's adding edit time as well! fingers crossed. if anyone ever wondered how a green screen works, I can explain that to y'all as soon as I'm sure my effort was successful. :)

Anyway, in order to tide you over, as I know you are all eager to hear your emails/comments read on the iPhone podcast, I have a quick little video announcing my new GeekGirl blog URL here, followed by a poll, because I need YOUR help in deciding whether or not I picked the right name! First, watch this (it's super-short, I promise):

A URL is a fancy name for a web address (i.e., www.GeekGirlKnows.com or Apple.com or Google.com, etc. etc.). You can actually have your website/blog "living" on one website addy, and then have a "Vanity URL" (a fancy word for a simpler web address) for which you just purchase the domain name, and simply have it "point" or "redirect" to where your website actually lives. (Maybe I'll do a GeekGirl Quickie on how this works if anyone out there is actually interested or curious! Let me know if you are).

To make a long story short, (or rather, a short story long!) since my original URL was really hard to describe to people (http://geekgirlpodcast.blogspot.com) my best friend/co-worker/officemate at the Tonight Show, Ross (check out his blog HERE), and I were brainstorming the other day on a website name that would be super easy and also fun and applicable to me and what I do here around the old GeekGirl blog. SO, we came up with GeekGirlKnows! Just imagine me saying, "You have questions? GeekGirlKnows!" How's that for a tagline? Fun, right?

There's only one slight problem...before we came up with GeekGirlKnows.com, I had purchased the domain GeekGirlPodcast.com. Both of them work right now (watch, open up a new window and type them both in...they magically go to the same place!) Now I'm not sure which one I like better! Here's where YOU guys come in! Below is a poll... give me your input on what name is better for my new URL!

So vote vote vote and tell me what YOU think! The winning name will be used in all of my GeekGirl graphics and promotions!

Stay tuned for the iPhone iLikes and iGripes video podcast starring YOUR questions and comments!!!

Cheers,

Daria aka GeekGirl

GeekGirl Quickie 3: Travel Gads!

Hey Geek Guys and Gals!

As promised, here is the QUICKIE that I shot right before I left on my trip to Bali, Indonesia. I didn't have time to finish editing & uploading it before I went, so I finished it this week, right when I got back! I talk about some fun gadgets that I call "travel essentials" that complement my high-tech, plugged-in life. Check it out and let me know your thoughts:

I'm working on Episode 7, a topic that I can proudly say was suggested by a GeekGirl blog buddy, and it's going to focus on the ubiquitous iPhone. If you have any gripes about the iPhone, either the previous versions or the latest & greatest, email them to me at geek.girl@earthlink.net. I'd especially love some VIDEO QUESTIONS emailed to me in any format as long as the file size doesn't exceed 7 MB (or, upload your question to YouTube and send me a link!) and I just MIGHT include your video question in the next podcast! (PS-the video question can be about ANYTHING that you think I might be able to answer for you!)

That's all for now, gang.

OOPS!!!

Hey Geek Guys and Gals!

I have to apologize to you all! I promised a Quickie, and while editing it, ran out of time before I left for an AMAZING trip to Bali, Indonesia. I forgot that I was taking my other laptop (without the editing software) and couldn't finish before my flight in order to post as promised! Ironically, the topic of the quickie was travel gadgets that help me stay organized and equipped while traveling. OOPSIES!! LOL.

Anyhow, I'm back in town now, and getting into the swing of things, and promise to finish the Quickie and post it in the next few days.

Thanks for hanging in there!

In the meantime, email me at geek.girl@earthlink.net if you have any questions, feedback, or just want to send me a note! Or, use this time to check out all of my videos on YouTube by clicking HERE.

Stay tuned!

BURNING CDs and DVDs:what YOU need to know

Hello Blog Buddies!

Ok, so we have my friends/neighbor and co-worker, Bob, to thank again for today's blog!

The other day, Bob created a movie using iMovie (a fun and easy editing software) on his new Mac, and he exported it to iDvd (a really great DVD-maker software where you can create menus with buttons and titles in fun little themes and then burn a DVD that you can play in your DVD player like a real, professional DVD!) and burned a DVD that he sent to his family and friends. "What's the problem, then?" you might ask. Certainly, this sounds like a success so far, right?

Well, blog buddies, I'll tell ya what the problem is: after Bob burned his fancy "authored" DVD that would play in a DVD player (we're going to start calling this type of DVD an "authored" DVD going forward...click HERE for the Wikipedia reference for DVD authoring. At the bottom of the entry there is a list of lots of software options--from high-end to freeware--for authoring your own DVD's), he deleted all of the original working source files off his computer (and by "working" and "source" files, I mean the iMovie file with all of the video/picture data in it that he originally created). He did this thinking that if he needed another copy of it, he could pop in the DVD he authored, and then just pull the files off it and copy them back to his computer. Click on the following link now for the sound effect that evokes:

In order to copy files from a DVD (or a DATA CD, for that matter), you need to have your SOURCE FILES burned onto a DATA DVD or DATA CD.

I know that this might be a bit confusing to some people, since you use the same burner on your computer to create both of these types of DVD's, but there is a distinction that is very important. Here's how I like to break it down using the metaphor of burning Audio CD's:

  • when you use iTunes to burn a CD that will play in your car's CD player, I'm sure you all know you can only fit 80 minutes worth of actual music (usually enough for a standard-length album) on it. well, have you ever used a CD to burn/back up your actual iTunes music files? you can fit TONS of them on there! Usually an 80 minute CD is equal to about 700 MB (mega-bytes) of DATA disk space. Why do you care about this when we're talking about DVD's? Here's why:
    • When you burn an AUTHORED disk, the software you are using needs to write special tracks on the disk that contain the information that allows you to play certain tracks or menu elements in your CD or DVD player, respectively. This data takes up quite a bit of room, depending on how complex your menus are, and essentially all of the information you are burning--including your original SOURCE files--is all being merged together into one, long "track" (for lack of a better word). This is why you cannot then pop it back into your computer and extract the original source files...it's all mixed in there with the DVD authoring files! (although, there is software that is not necessarily legal for "ripping" authored DVD content to your computer, which I would NEVER give out info about here* ;)
*feel free to email me if you want info about this :0)
    • When you burn DATA on a DVD or CD, the disk acts as a storage device, not unlike a removable USB drive or...brace yourself...like an old floppy disk! (remember those?) Whatever data you burn on a DATA disk just gets plopped on there in no particular order, and because there are no other commands burned on there (i.e. that would tell the CD how to play tracks in your CD player, or that would tell the DVD how to display the fancy menu you created when you pop it into your DVD player).
In order to actually show you the difference in what these types of disks look like when burned, I've taken the same content, the Juno soundtrack (BTW, GREAT movie, one of my faves), and I've burned it as both a DATA CD and as an AUTHORED CD, and then I popped them both into my computer and pulled up all the technical info about each disk. Here's what showed up:

The grand total side-by-side comparison?

AUTHORED CD: 479.2 MB
DATA CD: 42 MB

That means that the AUTHORED CD, in order to make it playable in CD players (and the same would go for a DVD) used a whopping 68% of the disk space on the CD for the SAME SOURCE CONTENT that the DATA CD used only 6% of total disk space for.

I hope that makes sense! Email me if you have questions about this or need clarification (geek.girl@earthlink.net), I know it's a bit confusing! Bottom line is that you CANNOT take the source files off an AUTHORED DVD or CD, and you can fit a lot less SOURCE content on them because of the space needed to actually author them. DATA DVD's or CD's, on the other hand, can fit a lot more of your source files, the data can be copied from them to any computer, but won't play your music/movies using a CD or DVD player. Make sense? Good!

Ok Blog Buddies, that's enough from me today!

Geek Girl Movie Review: The King of Kong A Fistful of Quarters

Hey Gang! So, I know this is not a movie review site, but I saw this documentary this weekend and I thought to myself, "Self, what is GEEKIER than full grown men rallying for the title original Donkey Kong high score?" The answer? Probably not much. :)

This film just came out on DVD, and I got a hold of it through a friend of a friend, and I had no idea what I was getting into when I popped the DVD in yesterday. What ensued was a wonderful story of good vs. evil...seemingly. You'll have to see it for yourself and decide, but I love the way the characters are set up (and remember, this is a real documentary, not a spoof documentary, but sometimes it almost seems like a spoof because the characters are such caricatures of stereotypes), and I love how the film ends. It's really interesting that there's a group of people who certify high scores in video games, too.
Here's a link to the website for the film:

I highly recommend this if you can get it on Netflix or however you watch movies.

Now for some Housekeeping items: I'm in production on the "Geek Girl Goes Green" video podcast...than you all for your suggestions and emails! I've got plenty of great content and ideas for this one. If you have a last-minute idea for how to be technologically green (remember to think outside the box here!), please send me an email or better yet, send me a VIDEO QUESTION as an attachment to geek.girl@earthlink.net and I'll make sure to include your video in my next video podcast!

GEEK GIRL'S NEW HAIRCUT, a good cause, and a damn-good hair straightening gadget!

Hey Blog Buddies!

OK, so you know how the subheading on my blog calls me a "not-so-ordinary geek girl?" The reason for that, as I'm sure those of you who know me will already know, is because I'm just as much into fashion, art, shoes, makeup and all of the artsy and not-simply-practical things that you would normally associate with a "geek". We're breaking down stereotypes here at the old Geek Girl Blog. :) LOL.

Anyhow, I JUST got my hair cut short for the first time in years, and, for those of you who are starting think that today's blog would be without any gadgets, think again! I wanted to share my new haircut with you all, as I'm pretty excited about it and still a bit in shock that I chopped off so much, and then I want to share a hair-related gadget with you that I just got that I LOVE--it's a modern marvel of engineering.

OK, here's the hair:

It's actually really dark underneath too, but you can't really see in this picture. You'll see it in the next podcast. Thoughts?? You likee? I think it's sassy and fun...and a change is always nice, especially if you've been in a slump like I have recently. :(

And now on to the gadget part--I asked for one thing and one thing only this year for my birthday, which was two weeks ago. I wanted a damn good hair straightener, like the one the stars use (not to be like them, but because they don't have time for crappy gadgets, and I decided that at 28 I deserved a damn good straightening gadget). So, my wildest dreams were fulfilled, and here you go...I present the GHD Styler:

it may not look like much, but for those of you (boys
and girls) who use devices such as this, this one's the bee's knees. Seriously. I wouldn't use that phrase if I weren't serious. :) (For more info on the styler, click HERE. I promise I have no interest in this company promotion wise, nor do I with any of the other products I talk about/review on this blog. They are just gadgets that I use, and I will be honest about them!)

And before I sign off, I just wanted to mention a worthy cause: I was bummed when I cut my hair that it wasn't long enough to donate to Locks of Love, (click on the name to visit their non-profit site), which provides hair pieces to kids suffering from illnesses that cause them to lose their hair. I thought I'd mention the site/cause here, as I feel that it's a very worthy cause, in the hopes that one of you out there might be thinking about cutting your hair too, and if so, perhaps yours is long enough for Locks of Love. If you do decide to do it, feel free to bring along your camera and send me photos/video of your cut and donation and I'll make sure to feature it in my next blog!

Allright Blog Buddies, that's all for now. Stay Tuned for more exciting stuff coming up!

Another Geek Girl Quickie-Episode 5.1: FlipCam Fun!

Hi Blog Buddies! So, I'm in production on some more exciting Geek Girl podcasts and have been busy answering your questions (thanks for sending them in! Remember that no question is too small or too big, and I'll always admit if I don't know the answer, but I'll help you find it!). Anywhoo, I was sitting at home after work the other night, and a friend/neighbor/co-worker of mine was going to come over for some 1-on-1 Geek Girl lessons on using his FlipCam with his brand new Mac (he JUST switched from PC--can we all say "Yay Bob!"?). The problem was that the FlipCam he had was made for use with PC's, and so was the software that came with it. Geek Girl to the rescue! I decided to do another impromptu Video Blog (notice the lack of my usual logo background and my Geek Girl glasses!) to share the process with all of you as well, just in case you're having the same issues! But don't worry if you're a PC user, understanding the basic principles in the process will be helpful for you no matter what platform you work on. So, here it is!

Geek Girl Goes Green! (and needs you)

Hello Blog Buddies!

Here is some formal thanks/business/cross-promotion to tend to before the actual topic of this post is addressed:

It has been a while since I've posted a new blog and/or podcast, and I've missed you all! Thanks for all of the emails and support you continue to send me, especially when myself and the whole Tonight Show staff got laid off for a month and when we were off the air for TWO months due to the writer's strike that is currently going on in Hollywood. The Tonight Show is back on the air now, and all of our super-cool web-features are back up and running (that's what I'm in charge of there). Click HERE to check out the Tonight Show website and all the cool original web shows and content that's there (pssssst-especially The John and Ross Show, (click HERE), featuring Ross Mathews and John Melendez from The Tonight Show. I'm a producer on that show, it's great fun and you get cool never-before-seen behind the scenes footage of the magic that is The Tonight Show. Watch the Q&A sessions to see how you can send in a video question and be featured on the NBC website in and episode of The John and Ross Show!).

OK, and now for the GREEN!

I just got an email from a Geek Girl viewer who gave me a great idea. Rick sent in the following tip about Recycling DVR boxes:

"You know when you subscribe to DirectTV and they make you buy the DVR? Well, if you leave DirecTV, the DVR becomes useless, you can sell it, and even then the person will have to get a new card. Well, inside the DVR is a150 gig hard drive. You can pop it out and put it into your PC, not sure about Macs tho. Someday I'll get around to buyin' a Mac. You just have to reformat the hard drive and you have an extra 150 gigs to store media or backup you PC/Mac or whatever. They did make you buy it."

What a great idea, right? I don't have a DVR since I have Cable and TiVo, so I had no idea about this. Then I got to thinking...there MUST be tons of ways to recycle/reuse your gadgets when you are done with them (I already have a few tricks up my sleeve that I'll include), so I'm going to do a whole Geek Girl Goes Green video podcast with all of YOUR ideas! You can even send me videos of yourself talking to me and telling me your recycling idea, or even a video demo of you showing me how to do it! Anything goes here, even tips on traditional disposal-recycling of electronics equipment. Everyone say "Thanks, Rick!" for the great tip that lead to a great idea. :)

So make sure you email me at geek.girl@earthlink.net with your Green ideas! And keep the regular questions & comments coming.
