Blu-Ray Players & Non-HD TV's?
Hey Gang! So, I just got a really good question that came into the old GeekGirl email inbox (geek.girl@earthlink.net for those of you who are new here!), and I thought I'd share it with y'all because it might be a common question: "...quick question for you - do Blu-Ray players work on regular tvs or do you need an HD TV ? there are some great deals on players and I want to pick one up, but my tv isnt HD."
Here was my response:
Blu-Ray players are meant for HD tv’s just because the picture is so stunning and has such great resolution, and thus they come with HDMI cables that eliminate the need for the old RCA (the yellow/red/black/white cables that you currently use for your DVD –to-TV connection. However, I’m pretty sure that you CAN still use the old RCA cables to connect to a regular TV, and then if/when you eventually upgrade to an HDTV, you can just swap the cables.
Just make sure when you buy your Blu-Ray player to check that it has the regular Audio/Video OUTPUTS on the back (most packaging will show you a diagram of the inputs/outputs on the back of the player, and if not just ask someone at the store) and you should be good to go. You should see something like this:
The outputs on the image at the very top left that are green, blue and red are HD outputs, as is the HDMI output at the bottom. But right above that HDMI output is the “LINE OUT” box, which still has either the S-Video option (which works with normal TV’s if you have an S-Video input) or just the standard yellow, red and white video inputs. This means that you can use it with your non-HD Tv!
Hope that helps!
Happy holidays!

Back in the Blog-s-sphere & Twitterverse!
There's good reason for my long absence from the blog/Twittersphere, and hopefully something will be inked and final in the next 2 weeks and if so, I'll be able to share it with y'all! In the meantime, lots of changes are going on in my world, and ALL roads point to MORE GEEK GIRL VIDEOS for the holidays AND for the New Year!
Here's what I've got in production right now:
-eBay horror story and tips quickie
-Holiday Gadgets
-2010-the future is here!
Any tips, suggestions or requests, GeekGirlGang, on topics you'd like to see discussed? I'm also considering doing a live, streaming chat a la my dear friend Ross Mathews (click HERE for his blog, and see below this paragraph for our live chat re-broadcast below from his Jay Leno Show dressing room backstage last Friday). What do you think of the u-stream software? Should I use the same software? Does anyone have any suggestions for great live streaming software with chat tools/features, etc.? I want to know!
I've missed you, GeekGirlGang, and can't WAIT to get all of this new stuff (and hopefully the good news I hope to share!) out there to YOU guys, the people who inspired this blog in the first place!
Post your comments in the COMMENTS section below, OR email me at geek.girl@earthlink.net!

IMPORTANT ALERT: eBay Fraudulent Buyers!
So I've had a horrible last 2 days with some dangerous eBay buyers who have a fraudulent system set up to prey upon people legitimately trying to sell stuff. It just happened to me TWICE in the last 3 days on the same item and I've spent hours on the phone with eBay and PayPal. I think it is so so so important to educate everyone out there about what happened to me that I'm going to cross the boundaries of GeekGirl and tell you my very personal story of what happened to me a few years ago and also just this week because I think you ALL need to know about it if you engage in any e-commerce on even the smallest level. We need to help protect one another in an ever-growing cyber-world!
While I'm working on this video I want to know if YOU have had any eBay or PayPal horror stories or phishing attempts-if you have and you feel comfortable sharing them, please email them to me at geek.girl@earthlink.net. I might be referencing YOUR story in the video!

GeekGirl Comic (Not Related to me but what a coincidence!)
So I got an email from comic book guru Sam Johnson the other day informing me of - wait for it - a comic strip based on a Geek Girl super-hero! Now, mind you, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with this blog or me or any of my videos, but I just thought it was really cool and something that you guys should definitely check out!
Click HERE (or on the image above) to read an interview with Sam Johnson about the genesis of his Geek Girl and the concept behind it. There are also links in that article to how you can check out the comic itself.
From the real-deal GeekGirl to the comic one, I have to give Sam Johnson a tip of the GeekGirl Glasses. :)

I NEED YOUR HELP! Tuning Adapters for HD TiVo??
So I actually need help from all of YOU out there! I have been in HD TiVo H-E-Double Hockey Sticks for a whole week because it turns out that Time Warner cable, (the monopoly that controls cable in my area), is not compatible with my brand new, shiny, HD TiVo.
It took me a week without TV (still counting) and talking to the TiVo people, Time Warner people and multiple cable visits to my house to find out that I actually need a TUNING ADAPTER in order for my TiVo to be compatible with the new cable cards that now replace your cable box. (Here's a picture of what they will supposedly look like, and also if you click on the picture it takes you to an article that tells you more about them:)
But here's the kicker: MY CABLE COMPANY DOESN'T HAVE THEM YET. I'm on a darned waitlist to get one once they do roll them out, and I'm just amazed that NO ONE at Time Warner had ANY idea what I was talking about. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did you end up getting a tuning adapter? Anyone know where I can even get a trial or beta version of one so I at least have TV for the interim? I'm SOOOOO frustrated and decided that YOU guys out there probably know more than the 20-some-odd people I've spoken with this week about this issues.
HELP! I need your advice, information, personal experiences, etc...anything that will help me have TV during the NBA Playoffs!! email me your info (or post in the COMMENTS section below) at geek.girl@earthlink.net.

HUGE News! Houston, we have a Sponsor!
Guess what...? After a few months of discussions and lots and lots of planning, I'm proud to tell all of you that the GeekGirl blog has just gotten an official sponsor! I present to all of you Roddenberry.com:
One of the reasons that posts have been few and far between lately is because I've been working with the fine peeps over at Roddenberry to iron out all of the details! We are going to try this out for a few months and see how it works out! So I would LOVE it if all of YOU would click on the Roddenberry logo above and go check out their website-they have TONS of cool SciFi stuff on there!
And if the name sounds familiar to you, it should! That's because Gene Roddenberry is the creator of one of my favorite things on this planet (aside from gadgets and technology, of course!)...STAR TREK!!! Yes, that's right. STAR TREK. And Roddenberry.com continues the great tradition of SciFi that was born when Star Trek was created.
I will update the blog a little later to let you all know what great new things you can expect now that we have a sponsor! But in the meantime, please check out Roddenberry.com and then come back here and post a comment with your thoughts and questions! Trust me, this is a REALLY good thing that will allow us to grow this blog together!

So I've been trying it out too! I'm even thinking about doing a GeekGirlPodcast about it. What I want to know is how many of YOU out there would benefit from it?
Do YOU want desperately to know what this Twitter thing is all about? Do you hate Twitter and wish that everyone would stop talking about it? Tell me your thoughts on Twitter in the comments section below, and while you are at it, follow me on Twitter and we can learn together!

Digital Book on Your iPhone! (and a FREE one for a limited time!)
If you have an iPhone, you MUST check out this really great new app just added! Independently published author Emmett James partnered with an open-source software writer for iPhone apps and converted his whole memoir into HTML code AND it's own, self-contained software app! All of the text and images and chapters are formatted for your iPhone, with digital bookmarks, page breaks, page-turners...the works! Is this the future of books?? I'm not quite sure that I can say that I would like it to be, because if you watched my last video you'd know that I LOVE printed books, however I think this free application and way to read a book is SUPER cool.
All you have to do is use your iPhone and go to the App store. Search "Admit One A Journey" and it will come up with this cover art as the icon:
Click on it to download/install, and the whole book with all of its custom formatting will download to your phone in like 3 minutes and you can start reading! There are even active links within the book (at the end) that will let you link to Amazon and purchase a printed version of the book!
I really am amazed by this technology. It's especially important for independent authors like Mr. James who aren't signed with a big publisher and are forced to fight "The Man" and the discriminatory cycle of publishing via grass-roots marketing efforts like this one. And the best part of it all? It's a very GREEN way to consume media! No trees were harmed in the making of this book! And you all know how much I love eco-friendly technology!
I think this type of self-promotion and ease of application creation for the App Store are a sign of the times and speak loudly to the direction our country and technology are moving in general. I also think it's an incredible way for people to be able to create their works of art, be it books, software, or art proper (in all forms of media, of course!) and get it out to the rest of the world without a middleman. All in all, I really think it's awesome! But what do YOU think?
I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on the subject! Please post them in the COMMENT section below. I might even do another GeekGirl poll to see what you all think so we can compare!
Your mission, GeekGirl Gang, is to
1) go to the app store on your iPhone, download the book, and then rate/review it in the app store.
2) come back here and post in the COMMENTS section below about your thoughts on digital books in this format in general!

GeekGirl gets Poll-tastic with Star Trek!
So lately, my true inner nerd has been in full-force as I've been watching Star Trek nonstop. I know that generally, in the past, "GeekGirl," to most of you, has come to mean "technology and gadgets," but no, web people, my inner geek-ness spans the boundaries of technology and into the world of Sci-Fi too. I love really good science fiction, and for Christmas this year I received not only the Star Trek Original Series Season 1 Special Collector's packaging, but I was also the lucky recipient of all 7 Director's Cuts of the Star Trek Motion Pictures. It's GeekGirl heaven!
Anyhow, I've been catching up on the episodes/films (I'm not done yet!) and I started thinking about how I am a "new" Star Trek fan. By "new" I mean that I had never ever even seen 1 episode or 1 film of the Star Trek franchise until early last year on my birthday (long story). The irony is that when I worked at a creative advertising agency for 6 years, I WORKED on ALL of the Star Trek DVD packaging, advertising, etc! Yet I had never experienced the joy that was Star Trek myself.
I started to wonder how many peeps of my fellow GeekGirl community were Star Trek fans themselves! So guess what...? Yep, that's right, we are going to do a poll! (remember when i disovered that online tool, PollDaddy, that let's you create & customize your own polls? Yup...I'm a nerd and that still excites me!) So below, my fellow Geeks, are some things I want to know about YOU and how much the gadget/technology world really crosses over into the world of Sci-Fi! Take a minute and share your likes/dislikes with me...!

Let's try this again!
Why do I look so happy? Well I just discovered a new blogging tool
that let's me email a photo with text to my blog, and it will
automatically publish the photo using the email subject and body copy
as the blog title and copy! How friggin' sweet is that?! But here's a
tip: make sure to type all of your copy ABOVE the photo attachment for
it to appear on the blog-I just made that mistake below. Oopsies!
Now all of my web people out there who blog have a new tool to use!
(if you don't already know about it, of course!)
Questions? Thoughts? Email them to me at geek.girl@earthlink.net!
Until next time, cheers!

Update from CES 2009! A video montage preview and some pix...
So it's past midnight and I'm in my hotel room feverishly editing all of the AWESOME stuff I filmed for you today at CES. I have come to the realization that since i have to be at McCarran Airport tomorrow morning at 10 am, and the cab lines will be insane, I won't finish the podcast tonight. (Plus, my laptop has run out of disc space and I can't render files! Always a bummer). But I couldn't leave y'all hanging! So here's a preview of the intro with some cool footage in a montage of the stuff you are going to see when I get back to LA and finish this this weekend! Oh, and here are some pictures too!!
Ok, that's it for my quickie preview...off to pack and jet back to LA...more over the weekend! I've got lots of stuff to share!
Cheers,
GeekGirl
